What prerequisites are required?
There are no specific course requirements, but students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and be in good standing with their home institution. The program welcomes a wide range of majors, from the arts to STEM. As long as you’re ready to engage and put in the effort, you’ll thrive in this academic environment.
What does a typical day look like?
A typical day on campus includes a morning seminar followed by a break for lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll attend a second session before having free time in the evenings to study or explore Fribourg on your own. This schedule allows for a balance between academics and personal time.
What does the program cost include?
The program cost covers tuition, many meals, and your housing accommodations. Additional personal expenses, like travel on weekends, are not included. A detailed breakdown of costs and inclusions can be found in our application information.
Can I sign up for more than one program in a single summer?
Yes! There are three three-week sessions each summer. International Security Studies (ISS) and Survey of International Organizations (SIO) run concurrently from July 1 – 19, 2025, and Global Environmental Justice (GEJ) runs from July 20 – August 9, 2025. You can attend either SIO or ISSP, then remain in Fribourg to complete GEJ.
Will I receive credits? How does that work?
Yes! Each program awards six college credits, equivalent to two courses. The University of Fribourg will provide an official transcript upon successful completion. These credits are fully accredited and can typically be transferred to your home institution.
How long is each program?
Each program lasts a total of six weeks, with the core experience taking place over three weeks in Europe. Prior to arrival, you’ll complete preparatory assignments, followed by a final paper after the program ends. This structure allows for a deep dive into the subject matter, with the added flexibility of pre- and post-program work.
Is this the world’s best vacation?
Emphatically, no. This program is an immersive academic experience, blending rigorous coursework with hands-on learning in international diplomacy. While you’ll have time to explore Europe, the focus is on education and engagement. If you’re looking for a backpacking trip through Europe, this isn’t the program for you.
What makes this program unique?
This program stands out for its hands-on access to global leaders in diplomacy. You’ll have opportunities to engage with ambassadors, senior officials, and other international leaders. This kind of real-world exposure is rare in a study abroad experience.
