Dive Deep into Global Climate Change

Study abroad in Switzerland and Italy while learning about the world’s most pressing environmental challenge—climate change. This unique program offers students an immersive experience, blending classroom learning with on-site visits to international organizations and meetings with key actors in the worldwide effort to curb global warming.

Our student engage directly with climate change experts and practitioners at the UN, World Meteorological Organization, World Food Programme, and more. The behind-the-scenes experiences give you a seat at the table during the global climate debate.

As a result, you will gain an understanding of how our world’s leading organizations view and are strategizing solutions to climate change.

This experience will help you take a critical look at this complex challenge. You will also learn about climate-related career paths in fields like conservation, food security, and analysis and policy development.

Base Schedule

Pre-departure: Readings and online assignments to prepare for coursework abroad.

Weeks 1 & 3: Fribourg, Switzerland

  • On-campus lectures, discussions, and guest speakers
  • Day trips to environmental protection-related institutions and other locations
  • Evenings and weekends free for homework and independent exploration

Weeks 2: Rome, Italy

  • Overnight travel to Rome
  • Private study visits to major international organizations and historic landmarks

Study-visit locations include:

  • United Nations
  • World Meteorological Organization
  • Swiss Parliament
  • World Food Programme
  • International Fund for Agricultural Development

Each site visit is more than a public tour and quick photo-op; we undertake extended behind-the-scenes meetings with the scientists, politicians, and practitioners at the forefront of the climate change debate.   

A highlight of the program is a multi-day excursion to Rome, where we visit major international organizations like the World Food Programme and explore the rich history of the city through its architecture and ancient ruins.

Academic Credit, Fully Insured

Fribourg Institute's International Security Studies program is accredited through University of Fribourg, a premiere university of Switzerland. Credits earned are transferable to your home institution.

All participating students are insured for in-country travel and medical emergencies through CISI Insurance company, used by top U.S. institutions for study abroad programming. Costs for coverage is included in the program free quoted above.
